I was totally unprepared for the ending. It surprised me! Is this typical of Kate Chopin? Should I have seen that ending coming? I do remember that Mrs. Siemens asked these questions on our homework pod. The ending of the story is not clear enough but there are some suggestions to it. There is a paragraph where it mentions about Armand Aubigny’s been French. Armand was raised in Paris, where slavery was not known as in Louisiana. Armand was eight when his mom died and he does not remember her in other words he does not remember her having a dark skin it is very possible she had a light skin. Armand he did not know he’s real background; he is of mixed race. Armand did not know about it until he reads the letter.

Desiree was adopted by the Valmonde's family after she was found by the side of the road. The Valmonde's family have no children at all, so they took her and raised her as their own child. Probably we can ask how how did Kate Chopin know about slavery? Did she grow up with slaves in the house? Yes. Her family in St. Louis, like many families in the city, held slaves in the 1850s. This was the time when the story was written so Kate was used to see slaves around her and the way they were treated.

Desiree's Baby one of my favorite short stories by Kate Chopin was written on November, 1892. Desiree was Armand Aubigny wife. He was the owner of L'Abri. This story took place in Louisiana befor the American Civil War, at a time when a white slave owner often consider that because his females slaves were his property, he had the right to have sex with them. In the story Desiree does not know what to think about Armand, she beliefs that he was having sex with La Blanche before they were married and the worst is that she still wonders if Armand continues having sex with La Blanche. Desiree's Baby short story has been critized about racism. Probably because of the true bakcground of Armand on the story or because at the time it took place.

In the Story of an Hour narrates the life of Mrs. Mallard a young woman who has a "hearth trouble". Her husband was death in a railroad disaster. Her sister Josephine and her husband's friend Richard came to her after hearing the disaster. They were concerned about Mrs. Mallard reaction and Josephine cautiously give her the news without exposing her to get ill. At the moment she is aware of her husband's death overcome with grief. But she experiences an unknown felling over her a feeling of relief and freedom. She does not know what to do with this feeling awakening on her: "There was something coming to her and she was waiting for it, fearfully."

kate Chopin's reputation has not always been so strong. She was know the most as a Southhern regionalist writer, or "local colorist." She was rediscovered by critics with the feminist movement. Another published short story by Kate was "The Story of an Hour" in 1894 which is one of the most read stories. Kate's beliefs regarding women's roles in marriages and feminine identity were exemplify on this story.
